TEACHING STRATEGY
The
courses are taught in English. The Institute has a
full time English lecturer to assist students to
improve their
English language skills and to help them overcome language difficulties.
All the courses are designed to teach the practical
skills of
geomatics. Consequently,70% of the course time is
devoted
to practical techniques and 30% to theoretical
knowledge.
Teaching is geared towards the complete
development of
each student. Students are given assignments and
practical
course work, and are encouraged in the proper
development
of their character and attitude. Students are
encouraged to
make full use of the library facilities and
other reference sources and materials, and to participate
actively in peer
group discussions.
As a general principle, students of the National
Diploma
course are also trained in self-development
through study,
research and critical analysis. By the end of
each course
they will have developed time management
and self-development skills, and will have achieved a
technical ability appropriate to the level of the course.
Students are provided with notes prepared by the
lecturers
and are expected to supplement these with
notes taken
during lectures. Moreover, students are also
expected to
make use of existing library facilities for using
other relevant
reference materials. In the case of assignments,
reference to
at least three additional sources is expected.
By doing so,
students gain the necessary technical knowledge
from the
course and develop the library skills that
are essential for
higher education.
The philosophy of students-centered learning is
adopted for
most courses. This places the emphasis on
students to
develop and increase their knowledge by
self-study using
reference materials such as textbooks and technical
journals.
The lecturing staff provides guidance and
supplementary
notes where required.
From time to time the institute invites external
speakers to
deliver lectures on specific topics for the
benefit of the
students.
