PRODUCTION CAPABILITIES
NSA has a full range of modern map
production capabilities, from digital survey instruments, including
GPS systems, for collecting details of natural and man-made features
on the ground; analogue, analytical and digital photogrammetric instruments;
computer-assisted cartography systems; to lithographic printing presses
for printing the final maps. An increasing emphasis is being placed
on computer-assisted techniques throughout the map making process as
map production technology is leading to greater automation of routine
manual processes.
To achieve this, the NSA has acquired a digital cartographic production
system (Enhanced Digital Production System or EDPS) based on Intergraph’s
MGE application suite. Digital photogrammetry equipment (DPE) has also
been sourced with the capability of scanning aerial photography and
carrying out digital (softcopy) photogrammetric aerial triangulation
and compilation from aerial photography to support production processes.
Reprographics capabilities have recently been enhanced with the
installation of a large format, state-of-the-art digital printer to
produce high quality photographic reproductions and enlargements.
Printing capabilities have also been enhanced with the replacement of
two offset lithographic printing presses and pre-press equipment with
a state-of-the-art four-colour press, a two-colour press, a guillotine,
contact frame and a plate processor to provide high quality printed
map products.
